Galway Juvenile Rules
1. Age groups should be synchronised with FIBA ie. participants must be under the age on Jan 1st of any given year

2. A player cannot play in an agegroup three years or more older than their agegroup, eg: an U11 cannot play U14 or older.
3. A player can only play in a maximum of two leagues within their ageband in any one season. eg: an U12 player can play in the U12 and U13 leagues OR the U12 and U14 leagues, he/she cannot play in U12, U13 & U14 leagues.
4. No player aged U16 or younger can play in the Adult competitions.
5. Up to and including U14 competitions there must be a minimum of 10 players.
There is no upper limit on the number of players on the panel
In the event of a team having less than 10 players for a game then the team will lose the game by forfeit (20-0)
The team with less than 10 players at the start is awarded 1 point (must have a minimum of 5 players).
Where both teams have less than 10 players present at the start of the game, the game can be played and each team is awarded 1 point.
Where a team is reduced to less than 10 players after a game has started (eg: injury) the game will proceed with the reduced number of players in the relevant quarters. The result of the game counts
6. Up to U12 competitions any player who plays in the first quarter cannot play in the second quarter. The same applies to the 3rd & 4th quarters, hence each player can only play in a maximum of 2 quarters, one in each half.
For U13 & U14 competitions any player who plays in the first quarter cannot play in the second quarter. However, any player can play in the second half.
For U13 & U14 competitions any player who plays in the first quarter cannot play in the second quarter. However, any player can play in the second half.
7. There is no press allowed in competitions up to U12.
A full court press is allowed in U13 competitions in the 4th quarter.
A full court press is allowed in the 3rd & 4th quarters in U14 competitions.
However, no team can press at U13 & U14 if they are 15 points up.
8. Man-to-man defence is compulsory for all agegroups up to and including U14.
9. Normal time out rules apply.
10. Up to and including U13 competitions 3point shots, if scored, are recorded as 2 points.
11. The basketball ball size for competitions is as follows:
Girls : U12 and younger Size 5
U13 and older Size 6
Boys: U12 and younger Size 5
U13 & U14 Size 6
U15 and older Size 7
12. A responsible adult must be present at all juvenile games and their name must be written on the scoresheet as either coach or assistant coach.
13. When two teams from the same club are entered in the same league/cup competition then a list of the team players must be sent to the coordinator and county secretary prior to the first match. Any player can only play on one team.
14. Games must be played as per the fixtures list
Home teams are responsible for communicating with the visiting team to arrange the fixture. Contact must be made at least 7 days in advance.
Cancelling games must be done at least 72 hours before, to allow the game to be refixed.
15. Double-up games (ie cup and league) are NOT allowed.
16. Overtime must be played if a game ends in a tie. 5 minute periods of extra time will be played until there is a result.
17. A Halfway League Checkpoint will occur in late December 31st Dec '11). All scheduled league matches in the first half of the season will have to be played by that date. Failure to play will result in no points.
Leagues will continue with the schedule after Christmas and will be frozen (on a date to be published) approximately one week before Finals Day. All remaining matches will have to be played by then.
18. Forfeits/Walkovers
Forfeits/Walkovers result in a 20-0 score for the winning team.
A Forfeit/Walkover can't be decided between two coaches/managers, it has to be approved by Board.
If two teams are having difficulty fixing a match then communication must be done by email, copying the coordinator, the overall league coordinator and county secretary. Suggested dates and times must be stated in the emails and replies must also be copied to the above people. If no resolution occurs then a team can apply for a forfeit and this will be decided by the Board and coordinator.
19. League Points
Win - 3pts, Loss 1pt, ForfeitWalkover Rec'd 3pts, Walkover Given 0pts, Forfeit 0pts
League positions are worked out by normal FIBA rules.
20. Fouls
4 team fouls per quarter, 5 personal fouls per game
21. Appeals
Clubs can appeal decisions to the Board (there is not a separate appeals committee). The cost of an appeal will be 50e, which will be returned if the appeal is successful.
22. Code of Behavior for coaches, players and parents
The Basketball Ireland codes should be available to every club.
Guidelines for parents who exceed acceptable behaviour at matches: The referee should ask the coach to approach the parent to ask them to moderate their behaviour. If the coach won't act then the referee can approach the parent and ask them to leave the gym, if necessary. Excessive behaviour cannot be tolerated at juvenile games. The behaviour of spectators and players is the responsibility of the club.
23. Referees
For U14 & U16 matches the home team must appoint neutral referees, through the referee coordinator. Failure to do this will result in a game forfeit by the home team, the away team will win the game 20-0 and receive 3 points, the home team gets no points.
Appointed referees will receive a fixed fee, costs shared by both teams.
For all other matches the home team must provide the referees, the visiting team has the option of bringing a referee, or referees can be appointed.
24. U12 Tournaments
U12 Boys and Girls league matches are played but the results do not count for points. A one day tournament is held at the end of the season (prior to Finals Day) where the winning semi finalists go forward to the A final and the losing semi finalists go forward to the B final.
25. AICC
It is the winning league team, on Finals Day, in U14 & U16 that goes forward to the AICC, not the winning cup teams.
Teams from outside County Galway, who play n the Galway League, are not eligible to go forward to the AICC.
26. 20 Point Rule
If a team is 20 points ahead then any subsequent scores do not show on the scoreboard unless matched by a score from the opposite side. The correct score will be recorded on the sheet.
